Old Orchard Beach Maine – Romantic Winter Beach Walks

Pier at Sunrise with SeaSmoke

The weather finally warmed up enough to about twenty-five degrees after a stretch of unusually bone chilling snowy days this past week, tempting  Heidi and I to get some much needed fresh air and leave our Old Orchard Beach Bed and Breakfast for a romantic walk along the beach.  We headed just down the street picked up two large hot cocoas at Beach Bagels and continued down to the pier for a stroll heading north towards Pine Point.  As most of the buildings along the beach are either summer homes or businesses, the snow on the buildings and beach was mostly unspoiled of footprints.

Beach in Winter

While some might think a walk in the winter is a little unusual, it is one of ours and our Atlantic Birches Inn guest’s favorite winter activity in Old Orchard Beach Maine.   The ocean water temperature is about thirty-five degrees cooler than the summer ocean temperature of 70 and the air temperature at about 15 degrees is about 75 degrees less than our summer swimming weather.   The snow covered sand reflects the sunlight like a mirror, and its reflection feels especially warm on your exposed skin.

Entrance to the Beach

The beach is just as pristine and scenic in the winter as it is in the summer. Make sure that you are covered with layers of fleece and wool, and your hands have warm mittens or gloves.   So when visiting our Southern Maine Bed and Breakfast  for your next Romantic Getaway, make sure not to miss a walk on the beach and maybe you will run into us along your walk on the beach.

Maine Cross Country Skiing

Christmas Decorations

These pictures show the shear amount of snowfall we have had this winter here in Old Orchard Beach Maine. We still have our Christmas decorations out because they are frozen solid to the ground.  Everything around the Atlantic Birches Inn is covered in snow and ice, even the Pier!

Ice Crusted Pier

We have had so much snow, that our parking has gotten so small that we had to hire a front loader to come in and push the snow onto the lawn and back yard. This has resulted in a mountain snow that my daughter and friends climb up and slide down with their snow discs.

The town roads and highway are clear and dry, the good news is that you can still walk the seven miles of white sand beach which is a minute walk from the Inn and see the sunrise by pier surrounded by seasmoke.

Pier at Sunrise Covered with Sea Smoke

Last weekend, Heidi, Alison and I went cross country skiing at Smiling Hill Farm you can Cross Country Ski throughout the farm on the logging roads and livestock paths.   It was pretty cold although it was a bright, sunny day which was perfect for traveling over some hilly up-down terrains, and plenty of open field skiing and intimate trails throughout the farm.  There were also plenty of people snowshoeing.

Smiling Hill Farm Cross Country Shiing

After about 2 hours skiing we decided to head for lunch at our favorite place for Chowder Gilberts Chowder House in Portland’s Old Port Area.  We look forward to helping you  to enjoy your stay in Maine’s Winter Wonderland.  Your Innkeepers: Ray, Heidi and Alison the apprentice
